Tea with Hungry LucyLettin’ the expletives fly!! In a no holds barred episode, War-N curses like a sailor just off the boat after ten years aboard! Also, the duo chat about the recent Midpoint Music Festival here in Cincinnati Ohio. While HL did perform at the festival on Saturday, they also were fortunate to attend many of their favourite bands shows and see some fabulous new folks. OPM’s of the week are: Katie Trotta, Leerone, The Whitney Barricklow Band, Entheos, Allison Tartalia, Stephanie’s Id, The Kelly Evans Band and Pale Beneath the Blue. Phew!! No story behind the song as there are none, or very little, left to talk about at present. Expect some changes in the format on future TWHL shows, but change is good :)

Much appreciation and love go to those who sent emails or comments about the loss of our beloved Chloe. She was a great kitty and will be missed by all who knew her.

Chloe in Chair

Unfortunately, on Monday September 18th we lost our little Chloe to Cancer. She put up a good fight, but at the end was just too weak to continue. She died in her sleep, so she was not in any pain. We will always remember our furry, chubby little kitty fondly and for those of you who knew her, always remember her the same way. Happy and always chatting!

Needless to say, it’s been a rough couple of weeks. We had to cancel a few shows, but now we are trying to get back into the swing of things and stay positive.

Thank you to everyone who e-mailed with condolences and concern for our family. Your kind words helped us through a very hard time. It’s nice to know there was so much love for us, and Chloe, and we love you very much.

Sincerely,

Christa Belle & War-N

Tea with Hungry LucyA bit of a downer episode, sadly, with an explanation of the canceled shows. Neither War-N or Christa are in a chatty mood this week so they share a recording of an interview with Rob Frank that originally aired on his “Hard Wired” show on WXOU radio up in Auburn Hills, MI on Aug 27th, 2006.

Please keep our beloved Chloe in your thoughts and prayers.

The door to the Upper Deck Tavern - Charleston, SC

Our last show was in Charleston, South Carolina on Sunday, September 10th. Despite the very small turnout, and narrow as hell entry way, it was a fun show. We got to hang out with “Electric Bird Noise” and the folks of “Castalia” for another night and actually watch both performances. Castalia has such a great, organic, intense sound that I want to get to know more of. Electric Bird Noise still amazed me the second time around and I wish I could have done better with the pictures I took. But, they both sounded great and I thoroughly enjoyed them all! We went to have pizza in the downstairs of the building, before the performances started, with Brian (of Electric Bird noise) and Chrissy. Joining us were our new found friends Donnie and Jeremy and long time friend/HL fan Chris (known as “Skorcher” to everyone on Shoutout). It was good pizza and great company!

War-N, Chris (Skorcher) and Christa

Chris also brought us a new Gnome friend who is related to Trevor! Apparently, Chris went out to his car and found a Gnome standing beside it. He said his name was Reginald and he had heard of Trevor’s accident and needed to get back to him. As it turned out, Reginald is Trevor’s cousin! So, Reginald will take up yet more room at HL HQ and keep an eye on Trevor as he mends. So far, he’s brought Trevor’s spirits up tremendously even though he’s still in pieces. Reginald will join us on our next leg of the tour to New York and beyond to keep OUR spirits up! Trevor will stay here and Chloe will keep an eye on him. What a great thing to acquire a new HL family member! Thanks Chris for sending him home :)

This is Reginald

At the show, we met up with another HL fan who sported a tech shirt the same as War-N’s! Allen also drove 2 hours to come see us perform and we are so grateful he was there. I just had to ask Allen if I could take his and War-N’s picture together as I knew I would never again in my life see this sight! I know War-N thought it was cool as hell too! Just look at War-N’s face :)

War-N and Allen ... true geeks stick together!

I wish we had more time in Charleston as it seems such a great city. We did get to hang out in a lovely area of the college for a bit. I was at home with the trees and taking pictures as War-N found free Wi-Fi on a bench underneath said trees! Minus a falling wet nut from a hungry squirrel, it was a nice place to rest and have a bit of fun. I love the moss-laiden trees in the South. So beautiful!! I also made a temporary canine friend, in a music store of all places, who proceeded to “root doot dee doot” me in the crotch and say HELLO! Thank you Chocolate Lab… at least you were brief about it!

The lovely park in Charleston War-N basking in the free bandwidth

During the Charleston performance, on the last song, we had yet another technical glitch! I’m starting to think that ever since Trevor’s accident the cards have really been stacked against us. But, War-N has been diligently working on fixing the problem and we should have video back for the rest of the shows… well, at the venues that are big enough for the screen and such. Our next trial will be Friday (September 15th) at the Jimmy and Judy premiere show. Fingers crossed it works!!!

After the show was done, and all gear had been loaded back into the minivan of doom, Chris, Donnie and Jeremy took us to a lovely coffee and dessert place. I had asked Chris, prior to the coffee, if I could interview him. He said yes, so I, and War-N, proceeded to interview him. I’ve not done as many interviews as I would have liked so far. Part of the reason is that I have so much fun that I don’t want to disrupt it by pulling out an invasive camera to point at someone. The other reason is that I get caught up in the moments and just plain forget! I wish I had interviewed Brian and Chrissy and a lot of the other fine folks we’ve met! Oh well. At least we have the memories :)

It’s after 4 AM on Thursday morning and I just can’t sleep! We went to War-N’s parent’s for a lovely evening of food and pleasant company. I did have coffee, so I’m thinking that’s the main reason I can’t sleep. I’ve also got a song stuck in my head (”In the Shadows” by The Rasmus) and it just keeps looping and looping. I love the song but I do wish it would let me be!!!

On a side note, I must say that though this tour has not been what we expected, I have learned a lot about myself and others. Some good and some bad. I have had a few realization moments that made me uncomfortable with myself and made me sort of “wake up” about a few things. All experience is good because it makes you learn! I hope I can always recognize when I need to be a better person and recognize when people need me to help them. Life is too short to focus on the negative.

Well, I will leave you with some random pictures of our visit thus far. More rambling and pics to come!!

Good night,

Christa Belle

Tea with Hungry LucyReginald who?? Listen and find out who Reginald is and also find out how the last three shows went in Florida and South Carolina. CB & War-N discuss the tons of new friends they’ve made while playing shows and also meeting old friends for the first time. OPM’s include Electric Bird Noise, Castalia, Set for Deletion, Disintegrator and NeverProject. All of which they have just played shows with in the past week! A lot of happenings during the tour have really worn the duo down physically. A near sickness setback for Christa and laryngitis for War-N. What fun… but no badness followed, so it’s all good :) Now, the duo will enjoy some much needed rest, swap out the suitcase clothing, and perform yet another attempt at a system update. Dang technology!! Still sans video, War-N will try and get that working.

A few updates for the tour. Hungry Lucy will NOT be touring the West Coast. Planning just didn’t work out to book the West side, so they will try and get out there some other time. Much apologies to those who wanted us to visit. Also, the Asheville, NC show has been cancelled due to many factors, but no bad blood or anything like that :) HL will try and visit there in the future.

That’s it for this episode. Join the duo in about two weeks for the next installation of weirdness, burping and other nonsensicle itemage!

Toodloo!!

Son of a Beach!

Monday, September 11th, 2006

We’ve had a busy few days here playing in Myrtle Beach and Charleston. The Myrtle Beach gig was at a tiny little garage space in the back to a retail store called Monkey Business. Honestly, my initial reaction when we arrived was “Oh dear. How is this going to workâ€?. It always a little unnerving to arrive in a new place and then see such an unusual venue. As we loaded in to Monkey Business, local band Castalia were setting up and running through some songs. They sounded pretty damn good. After a few minutes Brian (of Electric Bird Noise) arrived with a friendly smile. Brian is one of those people you feel that you’ve known for years. Brian loaded in his gear and then took us off to grab some dinner. We went to a little Mexican place called the Sun City Cafe and were joined by Brian’s girlfriend (Chrissy) and friend Phil and the folks in Castalia. It was great to hang out and chat a bit and helped put us at ease in our unfamiliar territory. After delicious food we headed back to Monkey Business where the opening band was already started. After they played a raucous set Brian setup up his gear and I preset some HL gear behind him. I honestly did not know what to expect of Electric Bird Noise but both Christa and I were blown away. One man (Brian), 1 guitar and lots of electronics, lights and smoke … amazing. This kind of looping performance can sometimes become a little repetitive, but Brian has obviously spent a lot of time honing each piece of music. There was a definite build & release and wonderful flow to each composition. Honestly a joy to experience and a total mood mender! Next up we took to the stage and quickly finished setting up, did a 30 sec soundcheck and launched into a slightly shorter set than usual. Our set was very well received which was very cool. After a quick tear down, Castalia took the stage. Sadly we were so busy packing up gear that we only got to properly enjoy there final song … bloody good though. I recommended to Beth (the lead singer/bassist) that they submit for Chicks RockFest in Cincinnati. I really think they would do well there.

After loading up the van and saying our goodbyes for now we headed back to our super sweet Super 8 Motel room, right on the beach. Being the off season meant that we got a nice cheap room with the beach right out back. We took a brief 1am stroll on the beach and then went to bed.

Cafe Tsunami and South Carolina

Florida Sky

We are now on our way to Myrtle Beach South Carolina to perform on Saturday. So, today is a driving day and a “finding postcardsâ€? day. We are sending postcards to War-N’s niece in school as part of a school project. We meant to get some postcards in Pinellas Park but we didn’t see any where we were. Anyhoo, we’ll find some today and send them off!

CB and War-N and Caroline

Last night at the Cafe Tsunami, we were treated so incredibly well! Caroline and everyone at the Cafe Tsunami were so incredibly sweet and hospitable. We weren’t hungry all day :) War-N discovered just how much he liked Sushi (vegetarian sushi, that is.) and he just wanted more and more! It was awesome. I must say, the pickled ginger didn’t settle too well with me, but i just avoided that and ate all the other yummy goodness!! Neil ( I don’t know if that’s the right spelling… sorry if it isn’t), the sushi chef, made us trays of sushi, plus miso soup, AND green tea with honey!

CB and Miso War-N and Teapot

After the show we were treated to two large containers of fried rice! We gobbled that up in our hotel room before we went to bed. It always seems we are starving after we perform no matter how much we eat during the day. I guess it’s the energy lost during performing that make you so hungry. Dunno?? But thanks again to Neil for making us such scrumptious grub!!

The performance felt better than any thus far, speaking for myself (cb). I felt so incredibly relaxed and into the songs. It was like performing for a room full of close friends. After the night was at it’s end, I felt I DID have a room full of new close friends! All of the bands were so nice and we had many a conversation with each person. A very special gift was given to us by a member of the last band (Set for Deletion). He (Feightner) is also a photographer and he had his portfolio with him. We looked through it and it was brilliant work!! He decided to GIVE us a print of our choice!!

CB and Feightner

I chose one of his self-portraits, as it was the one that stuck with me as I looked through his beautiful work, and I thought it was fitting to remember the occasion. I will put it on our wall where everyone can see it! I also had him sign it with one of our swanky silver Sharpie pens! :) I will cherish that picture, and moment, all my life.

So, we’ve been driving just over an hour today. We’re both in need of a Mocha, or equivalent, and are on the search!! I’m very tired today, but I thought journaling would help keep me awake in case War-N needed me. He still can’t talk, so he has to prod me if I’m asleep when he needs something. Poor thing. I had to order for him today at Bob Evans and the waitress must have thought me weird at first. I explained he had no voice, and she said he could still nod ;) She was quite nice. It’s nice to be in the South and have all the friendly people treating you like family. “Need anything else, hun?â€?. That was something I missed when we moved to California, having been in the land of “Hunâ€? in Kentucky. Funny how the little things can add up and mean so much!!

Well spit fire… I think I’ve rambled on quite enough today! Thanks again to everyone in Pinellas Park Florida for everything. You made two people feel very welcome and appreciated! You will not be forgotten!! Neither will the Absinthe! ;)

Take care all,

cb

War-N at Pizza Roma

Well, we’ve just had a lovely evening in Hilton Head South Carolina. We had planned to stay in Savannah Georgia, but we moved on up a bit in order to get ahead for the drive tomorrow. I know most people that know of Hilton Head consider it a very obvious resort town. I agree for the most part. But, we found two non-national chain places to partake of some nourishment and it were quite lovely! We had pizza at a family place called “Pizza Romaâ€? and the family members were there working together. The lady’s daughter was there with her and she kept running errands for her Mama and yelling (acceptably, and not in a rude way) “Mama…here’s this.â€? and so on. It was nice to see a true family business thriving in such a massive chain area! It was just what we were looking for for the evening. Then, we found a place down the “streetâ€? (paved pathway running through the maze of a stripmall) called “Java Joe’sâ€? and got a really good cuppa coffee that had actual flavour! THEN, we walked down the extremely dark street to the beach and ran across a few of those lovely, red, large cockroaches scuttling along the wood… YUCKY BLECH BLAH!!! I don’t like bugs and I instantly had a “Momma… pick me up!!â€? moment that I used to have as a child on similar beach areas!! :) We stood at the shore for a few moments and enjoyed the darkness and the water. I didn’t get too close ad I am not a beach person, but I can appreciate it for it’s amazing beauty and wonder. The moon was so lovely, but it would not photograph.

War-N on beach

So, now we are in the hotel room doing the update on the blog and will then do some video journaling. We had full strength coffee, so we’re both not quite tired yet. We’ll bring you further updates as we get stuff to talk about! A busy weekend in front of us full of new experiences. YAY!!

Nighty night,

cb & W
