Tea with Hungry Lucy - Episode 56
In this week’s particularly nonsense-filled episode, Christa and War-N chat about work on a new Hungry Lucy song which has them both feeling pretty happy about the new year already. A return to the Story Behind the Song segment touches on the song “Blame” (from the album, “Apparitions“). War-N calls it filler, while Christa calls it therapy. Other People’s Music for this week focuses on the fabulous local duo, Over the Rhine and their albums “Drunkard’s Prayer” and “Live from Nowhere, Volume 1” … lovely heart-felt music. War-N also talks about the Belgian group Airlock and their documentary soundtrack “The Long Journey Home“. War-N also played an Airlock song on Episode 9 of The Sonic Spotlight (which War-N’s Dad refers to as “The Splodcast”)
Please, tell us what is on your mind in text or using your sweet sounding voice!

I do indeed watch Extras and love it ! I have Series 1 on DVD and am waiting for Series 2 to come out - the second series ended here last November and it was sheer cringeworthy and embarrassing brilliance. Only Basil Fawlty and Andy Millman can make me laugh so hard and almost run away from the TV with their embarrassing behaviour. You’re in for a treat and a half… I won’t say any more but it’s hilarious.
Just like you two this week - hilarious ! War-N’s sex line made me snort out loud on the bus (severe gales so no cycling today) and several people stared at me with their best Paddington ‘hard stares’ ™
I also get weird looks from women who think I’m smiling at them when in fact I’m smiling at a comment you’ve made. If I get arrested, I’ll be calling you as part of my defence, OK ?
Have you seem ‘Little Britain Abroad’ yet ? A two-part show that they had on here at Christmas - I think that was the very end of LB (or at least Tom said so). It was much funnier than a lot of Series 3, which I felt was going downhill. Peter Kay as Mr Dudley’s seedy brother with his Russian bride !!

I am not sure if I am alone on this, but sometimes, when I hear you ‘bash’ your old songs, it cheapens the effect the song originally had on me…

Grant: We have not yet seen “LB Abroad” yet … I must seek that out.
KinGizz: Both Christa and I are very critical of ourselves. On one hand, it forces us to strive for better. I honestly had never considered the other hand, so I truly apologize if I’ve “ruined” any older songs for you. I shall try to stick with “If you don’t have anything good to say, don’t say anything” in future. To hear “Blame” for the first time in many years (for me, War-N) took me back to the time I was working on the music. “Blame” was one of the final tracks to produce for Apparitions. I remember taking the “this is good enough” approach in order to meet a deadline. This goes against my nature, as I always aim to be 99% happy with a finished song before stamping it as “complete”. That song, specifically, has always haunted me for that very reason. I should have articulated this much better on the podcast. For that, I apologize.

It took me MONTHS of trying to put together the right words to express what I wanted to say. I didn’t want to anger you…
You should not change what you want to say. It is your podcast after all, your window, you should open it when you need air. You just remember, you are (and were) better than you think.
You know, people have always told me my art was good. From little doodles, to actual full pieces. I would constantly down play my creations, even if I thought they WERE good.
But recently, I got to thinking. If one puts his or her artwork (music, visual, whatever) out for others to view and or appreciate, then the art is no longer totally just the property of the creator.
We put so much of ourselves into our work that we forget a major reason why we did it to begin with. We sometimes get caught up with “shoulda’sâ€? and coulda’sâ€? that we miss that magical experience that others share when they appreciate it.
I am no music critic, but online there are plenty. Some amateurs have described you as tedious, and repetitive. I totally disagree. You have the one ingredient that makes ‘woopsies’, or ‘bad mixing’ disappear.
Love.
A long time ago I described Hungry Lucy as a flower. I still see it that way. But a gardener with the most complex topsoil, advanced lights, and fanciest pots will not make a rose grow without the love and caring that it takes to make a blue ribbon blossom.
That is why I download every Sunday. That is why I woke up one morning at 5am to buy TKAK. That is why I giggled when reading Niel’s comments about you. That is why people in countries you never previously thought of going to BEG you to come and perform.
And that is why I wrote this.

Kingizz,
What thoughtful and caring feedback you provided. We agreed with your original comment, and applaude you for your most recent posting where you share your insight into what art and HL means to you.
