As far as the chewing of the wires, while it may look mean in the product video (although it makes me belly laugh when the cats set it off) we are using a product called SSSCAT to keep our cat out of 2 areas that she was using as a litter box. It is a can of compressed air with an infrared sensor (and on some models an audible alarm) that when triggered causes the can to spray a burst of air. It only took a couple of times for her to learn to stay away. Once in a while we'll hear one of them go off at night, but it is very rare that she goes near it anymore. And the one we have with an alarm on it only took one time for her to learn.
