Tea with Hungry Lucy #96 (Don't Believe the Skype!)

Tea with Hungry LucyWow, what a bunch of crap! Where to begin? Ok, War-N jumps in and talks about how we spent christmas day, as does CB, and the joys of a solitary holiday. CB chats about making her movies and how the vision of “Shawn Scorn” enters her brain every time she doesn’t complete something. Thank you, Shawn!! War-N poses the question to all of you about the possibility of a live call-in segment on TWHL to give the podcast more of a spontaneous feel. Wouldn’t you love that? Also, do you prefer whole albums, or do you just purchase individual songs? Let us know! OPM’s included Null Device and their 2007 album “Excursions” (iTunes), which was CB’s pick, and War-N chose Two Loons for Tea and their album “Nine Lucid Dreams” (iTunes / Amazon MP3). Movies talked about were the very powerful “Tideland” (trailer) and “I Am Legend” (trailer). Both of these films were VERY powerful, in different respects, and should be watched with much enthusiasm!!

Hope you have enjoyed the theme tunes, and all of the other jingles, as they are all retired as of now. Thank you for humoring them as long as you did :) With a new year, new tunes must be made. We are, after all, sporadic creatures with short attention spans! We are now feeling the flow of the music once again and hope to share some with you VERY soon! Thanks for listening and supporting us through nearly 100 episodes!!

Want to record a message for use in our 100th episode? Send us an email with an MP3 attached. We wanna know how TWHL has affected YOU!

The new(old) Null Device is really good….and a Happy New Year to you lot @ HL!

  3. iain telfer Says:

Copies of Glo are going for just under £40 sterling (that’s about $300) on Amazon.co.uk

You should get in there :-0 Amazing what prices things fetch esp. wonderous things :-)

A call in episode might be interesting.

I prefer to buy full albums, it’s rare that I buy a single song via iTunes or Amazon unless it’s some one-hit-wonder from the ’80s. I also prefer to buy CDs over digital. I have purchased a fair amount from iTunes but that is usually when it’s an import and the physical CD is $30 and iTunes has it for $9.99.

I’m guessing many of your fans prefer albums since we don’t really listen to top 40 radio for our music. (I could be wrong though).

For the most part I prefer to listen to an album from start to finish but I will admit since getting a 160 GB iPod I’ve had it on shuffle quite a bit. Now that I can carry my entire music collection (113 GB), putting it on shuffle plays many songs I have not listened to in a long time.

The Glove, Blue Sunshine is a great album, “Mouth to Mouth” is a favorite track.

And as far as not putting out a new album in 2007, no biggie, I can wait. Hell I waited 12 years for Kate Bush to put out a new album!

    Happy New Year!

  5. War-N Says:

40 quid for Glō?? That nuckin futts!! I’ve seen some ridiculous prices on EBay as well. I find that upsetting really … it’s a greedy markup by someone!

I too have become a shuffler Bibo … sometimes I’ll do a whole album. Cool, we have a way to go before we match Kate Bush’s absence. Did you like Aerial Bibo? I like most of it, but a few songs just feel a little forced to me.

  6. Bibo Says:

I do like Aerial quite a bit. I like the 2nd CD better than the 1st CD and I don’t really care for “Mrs. Bartolozzi”.

  7. tyim Says:

i grew up on concept albums… ya know.. your pink floyds, genesis, the who. so i tend to buy the whole cd rather than a song just because it’s ingrained in me. what do kids roll those funny cigarettes on these days? i mean thats what big ole album covers were made for!

  8. Christa Belle Says:

Cool. Glad to know most of you prefer the album road to the iTunes or digital download song-by-song road. I prefer an album any day!! Sometimes I get that disappointed feeling when shuffling on my pod. I’ll listen to a song and then expect the song that comes after it on it’s album! I usually go and start the whole album over :)

Yeah. They don’t make album covers like they used to. I’m/we’re putting a LOT of thought into our next one for sure!!! It would be funny to make it as large as an old LP and have a cd inside. Well, we’ll not go THAT far ;) Shipping would be insane!

Thanks guys! Keep the feedback comin’!

Hey there, Tyr here from Palm Springs California…

Albums: I prefer to buy the whole Album, mainly because I want to support the artist. There’s been times when I would love just about 3 songs & the rest were rubbish, however the artist won’t know that because I bought the whole ‘CD’… I love being able to purchase singles if I know the compilation is ‘bleh’… Example: if one of my mates plays it while we’re on the road to Los Angeles for a concert & I’m like ‘well track 2 & 8 were great, who where they?’… Hence I purchase just singles…

Skype: Well I personally think it’s a great Idea… I find myself calling into other podcasts like Mugglecast & Pottercast whenever they have a live show… so it would be nice hearing the two of you via skype…. & then later hearing it on the podcast once the bloody iPod downloads/sync it…

Speaking of iPod’s… I had a question that maybe the two of you could answer or possibly post about. I love Hungry Lucy ‘duh’ … & like most of the characters out there I use iTunes to get my podcast & to load my music library; as well as purchase extra songs. Now m question is about “Equalizersâ€?… I wondered if you War-N or Christa Belle have a preference equalizer in iTunes that we as listeners should be using to get the best sound out of your albums? I normally use the Pop option because the sound tends to come out clearer & the vocals seem to get a boost… However there are tracks like ‘harvest’ & ‘cover me’ were ‘Pop’ is too loud? Not sure if that makes much sense… So I wondered what’s the ‘best’ one to use or if you could post a personalized equalizer that would be awesome… I wonder if anyone else has asked this? Any other posters here wondered the same thing?

Anyways, keep up the great work… & can’t wait to hear the new work… & the podcast of course… it helps me have a laugh before hitting the hay…

Howdy, kids. Jumping on the bandwagon here with the album preference. A brand spanking new album is a spiritual experience for me. Sit down with the liner notes and lyrics and have a little private moment. That is my new album ritual.

Neil and I vote for the Skype show. I recently started using Skype, and if you’re somewhat patient, you can usually get it to work. Not perfect, but for free it’s a pretty amazing little do-jiggy.

Finallly, big fan of the jingles, so can’t wait to hear new ones. Cheers to a great 2008!

  11. Grant Says:

Albums for me - it’s a very tactile and sentimental thing; those old gatefold sleeves were the canine’s nadgers. Even now I like to get the physical CD. It has he advantage of being able to be ripped at much higher quality than you get when you buy from somewhere like iTunes, plus it’s yours forever and has no DRM.

Skype would be fun - only used it for real on Saturday to speak to my folks & sis in Houston, and when they turned on their webcam it was even more amazing.

I’m just catching up on shows I missed over the hols.

Two Loons For Tea - I played ‘Sunset Room’ and ‘Monkey’ on Three From Leith Show 108 on Oct 2nd. Good stuff :-)

  12. Bibo Says:

I find no equalization to be best. If you are using the stock Apple earbuds get a better pair as they only have a frequency response of 20Hz-20kHz.
I have a pair of over the ear headphones with a Frequency Response of 5Hz - 30kHz. And a pair of vertical in-ear headphones with a Frequency Response of 10Hz - 23kHz. The do a great job on the highs and lows. You can feel the bass!

Most of the time I listen though speakers with a line-out connection (a sendstation mini-dock) that bypasses the iPods equalization.

  13. Christa Belle Says:

I never use an equalizer. I just let ‘em play. I tried when I first got my iPod, but never liked how things sounded with an equalizer. I prefer it straight from the music box :) I rarely listen through headphones or earbuds either. I never have a need to. But if I did, I’d use the big headphones!! ;)

As far as HL is concerned, I think since we mix and master ourselves, we don’t get the “oh so tight” sound that a mass-produced album has. I prefer it that way, too! It becomes more of a representation of how we felt than how much compression we could squeeze into our music. I have been told by a few that my vocals are always too quiet. I disagree, but I’m sorry people feel that way. After all, it’s not just me in Hungry Lucy ;)

    Hope that helped!

    Much Love,

    cb

  14. War-N Says:

I never use the equalizer within iTunes or the iPod either. I typically listen through my fave headphones (Sennheiser HD 25 SP). I use these on-stage and while mixing HL music as well. I think I still have a few of the earbuds that come with the iPod still in their wrapping. I don’t like the way those things sounds at all. In fact, I’m not a fan of in-ear buds at all. There’s a lot more to our ears than the canal. With over-ear headphones you make better use of all those glorious ear folds. :)

It seems that the shift to in-ear buds is more a visual thing that anything else. It strikes me as funny that the appearance of something designed for hearing is important.

Anyway … I totally got off the point. I don’t use equalizers when listening to music in headphones. I’d rather hear what the original mix intended.

I’m all for a call in show! let us hear some others burping and the like…

I’m to be added to the list of Hard copy Albums. (I really miss the beautiful artwork potential you got with VINYL, looking at the booklets on CD’s just isn’t the same, having one large enough to hold in your hands is spoilt by all the folds.

My EQ settings on my pod are either ELECTRONIC, or ACOUSTIC, they satisfy my desire for full audio range without pushing one specific part to the forfront.

My favorite ‘phones are SURE E2’s ( noise ISOLATING, not cancelling) they have three different kinds AND sizes of fittings for your eats, soft rubber, firm rubber, and my favorite, spongy foam, in small, medium and large like the industrial hearing protection ear pieces. they are comfortable, and block out most extraenous sound, resulting in your listening volume being much lower than you have to use with other headphones. These are a small step down from those ear pieces used by musicians for live performances, but if you want to, you can go to a hearing specialist and have custom fitted ear-pieces made for them without having to shell out 500 bucks plus the mould for your ear. The frequency response is intense and expansive, much deeper bass than I’ve ever heard in an ‘IN THE EAR’ type of phone. Only cost about 100 bucks, and you can buy replacement pieces for when yours finally wear out. for those tecky types like War-N, they also make one that patches into your PMD and cell phone, so you can talk without having to pull out the buds and re-insert them after your call. Some complane about the insertion being difficult, but with a wee bit o’ practise, it’s easy, and they are washable too, to keep your ears healthy.

    I’ve rattled on enough, so…
